Backgammon Pip Trainer

Count faster · Double smarter

The pip count tells you whether your lead is big enough to double, and whether to take. Pip Trainer turns counting into a quick daily drill: realistic positions, a clock, instant feedback, and the shortcuts strong players actually use.

A backgammon race position with counting shortcuts ringed in color

Everything You Need to Count Like a Pro

Practice offline, any time. Every position is new.

Timed drills

Each board starts covered. Tap Start when you're ready and the clock runs until you check, turning amber at 30 seconds and red after a minute.

Full count or differential

Enter both sides' totals, or just say who leads and by how much. Practice on races, bear-offs or full-game positions.

Counting shortcuts

Colored rings mark the chunks to count in one go (full home rows, runs and stacks), with the math laid out after every position.

Doubling cube advice

Every race result tells you whether the leader should double, and whether it's a take or a pass, using the 8-9-12 rule and the Keith count for short races.

Speed & accuracy stats

Average time, your last 10, best perfect time, perfect rate and average pips off, so you can see yourself getting faster.

13 board themes

Classic wood, tournament blue, a cork board, team colors and more, plus light and dark mode and 12 languages.

Pip Differential: matching checkers on mirror points crossed out with red X's

Pip Differential: X out what matches

In a race, what matters is the gap, not the totals. If you have two on your 2-point and your opponent has two on theirs, they cancel. Pip Trainer crosses out every matching pair so you learn to count only what's left.

  • Exact matches crossed out on the board
  • Optional near pairs (your 6 vs their 5 = +1)
  • Step-by-step breakdown after every check

Why Count? To Know When to Double

The 8-9-12 rule for longer races: the lead as a percentage of the leader's count.

8%Lead to make an initial double
9%Lead to redouble
12%Most the other side can still take
